I want to write a story and to make a point of context the main character is the son of a famous (well famous to me) character from a tv show. the tv show character will be mentioned once in the introduction and then never again. it is not a fan fiction or a spin-off from the original show. can i use that?

To quote our disclaimer page We do not accept celebrity stories, or those containing famous people. The same is true of fan fiction and derivative works.

So unfortunately it wouldn't be acceptable. You could create a fictional celebrity for your story, however.

as i have said, it will not be fan fiction or anything to do with the character of the tv show, just mentioning him in relation to my character

Understandable, though still not acceptable. Too many legal issues with mentioning real-life people without their prior consent.

I’ve always wanted to write a story called Charles Dick’s Ends. It would be an alternate history piece where a young man named Charles takes advantage of poor girls. He tosses them a shilling so they can make ends meet after he meats their ends. It would be like a fable with a moral and all that.

i like it. just make sure the girls are 16+ when you write it. also, there's a character in Oliver Twist called Master Bates and one called Mr. Dick in David Copperfield. smile

I always thought famouse people were fair game, but characters were not, because that would be fanfic. So I could use Jennifer Anniston (and would love to..) but NOT Rachael Green in a story.

I don't think either case would be allowed as there are rules here against stories containing famous people OR derivative works.

I think this is because with a fictional character you might infringe copyright (the derivative bit), while a real person would be protected by libel laws.

and one called Mr. Dick in David Copperfield. smile

So he makes his dick disappear and reappear? Cool. I like that.

This is getting so confusing to me. Are we not even allowed to mention real people in our fictional stories? If I write a story about ballet can I not mention Baryshnikov just to say he is a famous dancer? If I write a story about famous murderers can I not mention a real serial killer now on death row? Or am I missing something?

Maybe they need to be dead now?

. ok, to clear up the confusion here - i think even my mods get confused at times. lol Real people can be mentioned, they can be referenced - what we would prefer, is that they are not mentioned as part of any sexual element, ie:

this is ok - I ran into Brad Pitt at Burger King. I told him I loved his new movie. He said thank you and signed an autograph.

Or: I love Brad Pitt's new movie. He's super hot. I have his poster in my room.

This is not ok - I ran into Brad Pitt at Burger King. I told him I loved his new movie and wanted to suck his cock. He grabbed my hair, pushed me down on my knees, and shoved his prick into my mouth.

Makes sense now? smile

As I understand it, though, characters could only be mentioned in the context of, "Jaime Lannister was hot in Game of Thrones," in essence, speaking if him as a cultural reference, not as a living person in your story. That would be public domain. If he were referenced as a living person, your story would, by default, be happening in that world, so the copyright would be infringed.

Would that be correct?

I like how that was the first example that came to your mind lol

Nine and a half years and the same set of tired, derogatory tropes employed. Always at the same targets.

You were flinging Trump quality, 5th grade sniping before DJT ever came on the scene and re-energized the pre-pubescent, back of the school bus humor vibe. Yes, you can do this all day, too.
The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.

He must be homophobic as well. I have a history of bisexuality so I am not shamed by him. Honestly, it is to Jacks shame that he would find it something to ‘insult’ me with. Another pathetic misfire by the Clown Fool of Lush.

What about Porn Stars? I have seen a few stories where Porn Stars are actually in the story, full name, body and everything. Are they allowed because they are already in the so called "biz" or is that a no?

I know you can't reference a famous person, but I am sure we can say our character looks like Rachel Green from that popular sitcom, or is that still a no, because again I have seen that type of description used many times. We aren't saying the character IS Rachel Green, but her outward appearance is similair.

Just clearing a few things up for a future story I am trying to write without breaking any rules.

I mustn't have been misfiring last night though right? I mean simpleton changed her location under her avatar didn't she... I taught her the difference between "some where" and "somewhere". More than I can say for you.

I would assume porn stars would still fall under the no celebrities rubric myself. Possibly the mods who passed those stories didn't know their porn stars well enough to catch it? Certainly I am largely in the dark about who is big in porn today (my porn heyday was the early nineties through early noughties).

And the "similar to" is allowed, IIRC, but wait for a mod ruling. It's been years since my time backstage. After all, people say it about other people all the time (Hey, you look like ...).

What about historical fiction?

Say, I wanted to write a story about how Buzz Aldrin and Neal Armstrong had a dick measuring contest on the way to the moon (because how else were they supposed to pass the time?).

Post-avant-retro-demelodicized-electro-yodel-core is my jam.
