The poet Irina Ratushinskaya, born in the Soviet Union in 1954, died on 5 July aged 63.

Maybe she's not well known to many people, but she was someone I came across at university, and was amazed by, and grew to admire very much. As recently as the 1980s, she was imprisoned and tortured by the Soviet authorities for dissident activities, and sent to a labour camp, where she wrote poetry on pieces of soap, which she then memorized before (literally) washing away the evidence. She was freed by President Gorbachev in 1986, and moved to England, before returning to Moscow after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Just one brief extract (quoted in her obituary in the UK Times):

"I will live and survive and be asked
How they slammed my head against a trestle
How I had to freeze at nights
How my hair started to turn grey
But I'll smile. And will crack some joke
And brush away the encroaching shadow."

RIP Irina

I'm not as familiar with her work, as I am with her struggles. She was anti-soviet, and an outspoken advocate for freedom and democracy, and was exiled for years. I am very sorry to hear of her loss. Some of our greatest people get lost in history. I'd hate this to be the case for her. Thank you for posting this, she was indeed, a great lady.

RIP

Irina's poetry is a testament to the truest of human spirits, to be able to write of love and hope in a Russian camp for political prisoners. Even after her internment for being a subversive. Her crime was just being critical of the Russian government, she told us of the joys that life still offered for those that chose to look beyond the pain and horrors that life can bring. Her gulag memior, 'Grey is the Color of Hope' tells what her life and the other female political prisoners was like. The poem you quote shows that beauty exists even in horror. Yet through all this she still showed us that beauty, love and hope exists..... thank you for honoring her.

Such a gift can only be received once,
And perhaps is only needed once."

There are times she is kneeling out of obedience, reverence and respect. Those are the times it is okay to stand above her. But when she is kneeling because the weight of the world is just too heavy to bear … that is when You should be kneeling beside her.
