Arguably the greatest rock voice of all time, Chris Cornell has passed away. 4 octaves of complete awesomeness, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave amongst others. Soundgarden paved the way for Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails at the forefront of the Seattle grunge scene.

Tragically he is now saying "Hello 2 Heaven"

RIP

I wasn't a big fan of the grunge scene when it started, but I soon realized just how much talent was packed into that scene. Chris Cornell was arguably the best vocalist to come out of it and one of the best of his generation period. Sad to see him go so young (just turned 52 myself so the age make hit all the harder).

Depressing beyond all belief. Through the '90s, his music stayed with me...I was a fan of Audioslave from day one. I won't be focusing on what he could have done next, but instead everything he left behind to remember him by.

His Bond track was better than any other. RIP to one taken too soon.

It's now being reported that he died of "suicide by hanging." We'll never know or maybe understand why he'd do that, but regardless, it's still a horrid loss.

Was just going to update this. As you say Katie, what would have driven him to this is baffling but it's so sad he felt he had no other choice.

For all the love Adele's "Skyfall" got, I think that "You Know My Name" is really the definitive Bond theme for the Craig era. Like Craig's Bond, it packs a darkness and drama that is unlike most of its predecessors.

Whatsoever I've feared has come to life
Whatsoever I've fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time
Cause I fell on black days
-Soundgarden.

Seattle is covered in black clouds today
and crows fall like flower petals from the sky
wings like silent songs and prayers
disappearing into the hole that's opened up in our hearts

for those who don't get why we mourn the deaths of artists, understand that they have been a respite from the storm, a haven when all around us goes dark and fear eats at our souls. They've been family, friends, role models, cheerleaders, and teachers. They have been there when those who should have been have failed us. They helped us through bad times and helped show us how to survive when things are hard. Sometimes they help us get out of bed. Sometimes they keep us on our feet when we want to give up. Sometimes they save our lives. Artists have inspired us in endless ways during our lives. Shown us the beauty, the ugly, comforted us through fear and through anger. We've made memories with them, so when they die, a part of us dies.

RIP Chris. Love to your family, friends, and fans. You will be greatly missed.

I'm still so sad about this. Was listening to all his music today. Black Hole Sun was the first song I ever danced to with a boy - that memory is imprinted forever - youth and nostalgia and ugh... So tragic to lose one of the good ones. So much creativity and artistry lends itself to darkness, and sometimes it just keeps you. RIP.

I had only ever seen him live once on his Higher Truth Tour. He was excellent. Really shocked me finding this out.
Insert something witty here.

Aye. View to Kill and You Only Live Twice there the Bond themes for the Connery suave character.

Craig's was a brutal tank that was emotional broken by the end of Casino Royale. Cornell's song for perfect. And is one of my favorites and was honesty one of my first introductions to his music. I know. I came late to the party given my age.

A lot of pain, power, and need for Hope packed into that voice. A damn fucking shame how depression robs us of the great creative minds.

And a shit time to be losing all the great singers. Life's a damned dirty bitch you try and survive the best way you can. And more often than not, it robs you early.

You surely meant "Goldfinger", not "View to a Kill". "View to a Kill" was a Moore film and was one of the better themes of that Bond era in spite of being done by Duran Duran.

Great artists dying young is one of those historical themes that never seems to die. You see it going back to Chopin (one of the greatest pianists of his day) and Mozart (ditto). Not sure if there's any statistical justification for thinking so, but it seems to be a penchant for burning bright and flaming out early.
