Adult Sites Without Age Verification to Be Blocked

Sorry, I really don't know the best part of the forum to put this in, and sorry if there"s another thread elsewhere!

I just read this:

"Plans to block all porn websites in Britain if they don’t provide an age verification system are to go ahead – despite protests from privacy groups.

The move would see websites blocked by ISPs and mobile companies if they don’t put in place an age verification system.

But privacy groups have warned that has warned that efforts to verify people’s age could lead to ‘lists’ of users of porn sites – and be vulnerable to ‘Ashley Madison’ style leaks.

Culture Secretary Karen Bradley said the move would protect children from “harmful pornographic content” and fulfil a Conservative manifesto promise.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the age verification regulator, will be given powers to make internet service providers block porn sites which do not put age checks in place to make them inaccessible to children.

Ms Bradley said: ‘We made a promise to keep children safe from harmful pornographic content online and that is exactly what we are doing.

‘Only adults should be allowed to view such content and we have appointed a regulator, BBFC, to make sure the right age checks are in place to make that happen.

‘If sites refuse to comply, they should be blocked.

The powers will be brought forward in amendments to the Digital Economy Bill later this month.

They will allow the BBFC to issue a notice to internet service providers, and those that cover mobile network operators, to prevent access to websites that have no or inadequate age verification for porn."


How will Lush look to implement these checks, since I'm pretty sure this sexy site won't be overlooked. I don't know how it's meant to work, whether there will be standard things you have to do, or certain information we must supply. I'm not sure what "proof" may be required. I have no problem with Nicola and Gav knowing my personal details (not very interesting), but I know others will, and will have questions about potential data leaks.

I'm not sure if site owners have had formal correspondance about this yet, or if it will be a rolling programme, if it does come to pass in reality.

Many sites just use a credit card to verify since most CC issuers won't give cards to people under 18. So the paying members of any level should be verifiable that way. Not sure what you do about non-paying visitors, though I imagine it mean testing for UK IP addresses and only allowing registered subscribers from those blocks. There's no similar movement afoot here in Canada so I hope that whatever they do can be limited to constituencies that actually require it.

With the new government policy coming into force in April, will this affect access to Lush, and if so, what verification system will you be using, please?

Or our idiot politicians could prosecute parents that allow their children access to pornography.
It's a simple thing to put parental controls on equipment, hell even the ones built into M$ work a treat. But it seems lazy authorities don't like to punish lazy people.
As it is at least one mobile provider has been blocking adult sites for ages.

Looks like there will be far more business for the VPN companies coming from the UK with this and the snoopers charter. Next will be the argument "If you're doing nothing wrong, what have you got to hide?" to that I say, let me install cameras in every room in your house as if you are doing nothing wrong....

We're working hard behind the scenes on this.

As a temporary measure for UK surfers, we may have to close off all areas of the site which contain adult content (images / videos). UK surfers will be served up essentially a text only version of the site. New members will get the same, but be able to use the commenting, voting, messaging services, and submit stories.

The government department responsible advises that provided the content is behind a pay wall, we should be ok. So UK members (with free access) will need to upgrade to a Bronze or above membership if they wish to keep using the site as they do now. At less than $1 a month, that's not a massive stretch I'd have thought.

We will undoubtedly lose a lot of traffic and perhaps some members too, because of this idiotic Draconian approach. But non-compliance means we'll lose ALL our UK traffic, as we'll get blocked at ISP level.

There's also threats that non-compliant websites will be seized (highly unlikely they'd be able to do that to a non-UK registered and hosted site), or us being fined etc etc..

The whole thing has been handled as badly as Brexit.

I looked into using a 3rd party age verification service as the Govt suggests. The cost for the number of UK surfers we have, works out to be about 10 x what the site earns!

If the Govt were serious about it, they would manage it properly. Issue online passes to people, and give webmasters tools to implement it FREE.

I thought you'd be busy with it, but I had no idea what it's supposed to '"look like" either from the users' end or yours. I suppose, since politicians are professional wankers, they don't need extra stimulation. They simply get off on making things hard for everybody else (not in the fun way).
