A few readers have commented to me both in public and private about changes they would make to the plot of my stories, or suggestions for possible sequels. Most of the time they're polite enough about it, but my usual response is some variation of 'go write your own story'. I'm wondering if other authors get these kinds of suggestions, and how they handle them.

I never get those, which confirms that my stories are perfect of course ;)

If I ever write a story that is published here and someone made the effort and took the time to write me about it, and suggested a possible sequel, I’d be so happy that I’d be jumping for joy and turning cartwheels. Anyone reading this, you need to know something about me; I never could turn cartwheels. At that moment I’d be yelling, ‘YAHOO’ so loud that people half way around the world would hear me, because I would feel that, ‘finally, I’m a successful author’. Just knowing they thought enough of my writing to want to read more, I think would be the greatest compliment any reader could pay a writer. I would know that I had at least one dedicated fan. Even if I hadn’t thought of adding another chapter to the story, perhaps something they suggested would give me an idea that I could develop further. Who knows where that may lead?

As far as changing the plot, perhaps if I added other chapters, that might be something to consider and maybe slant the story in that new direction, if it was better than what I had originally. If I didn’t care for their suggestions, I’d answer them and let them know that I appreciated their thoughts and ideas, and that they had made the extra effort to contact me. It would be an excellent time to explain why I had taken the story in the direction I had.

Open up a channel of communication with them, and they will remember you. You can bet that the next story you write, they will jump at the chance to read it, simply because your name will be in their mind, and they will be anxious to see what you have now. I can’t think of any better way to get good name recognition.

I hope you don’t take this the wrong way because I certainly don’t mean to hurt your feelings by what I’m about to say, and I definitely have NO intention of starting a fight here. If I cared enough about some story I’d read, to write to the author, and I received a reply of something along the line of ‘go write your own story’, I would feel slighted, and yes, even a bit hurt. It’s true, I would remember that person’s name, however, I think I can say that it is very doubtful I’d read any more of their stories. There are too many other good writers and stories on this site.

I welcome in-depth feedback, both good and bad, from readers, because that tells me where I am weak and need to pay more attention to my writing. Simple comments from readers such as ‘Great’, ‘I love it’ or ‘a 5’ are nice and they caress my ego, but they don’t tell me anything. If the reader liked my story, then I would like them to tell me what they liked and why? Be specific. What was their favorite sentence or paragraph? Was it my character development, plot, dialogue or what? If there is something they didn’t care for, again, be specific and tell me what it was. If you are honest in what you say, you won’t hurt my feelings in any way, because this is the only way I have any hope of improving my writing.

Any authors here that I’ve left comments to and are reading this, will know that this is the way I’ve commented. In 99.99% of the cases I’ve received a quick ‘Thank You’ following my detailed remarks, or most likely a personal message from them thanking me for what I said, and the details I mentioned. I’ve even gained two or three friends simply from my critiques, even if I pointed out something I thought perhaps could have been handled differently.

NOLL:

When I read your comment about the reason you never received those kinds of remarks from your readers because your stories were perfect, I had to laugh out loud. LOL You are so funny. I love your wonderful sense of humor. I can see there is NO modesty there. (pun intended)
If you're feeling bored during this Covid-19 epidemic I’d like to suggest
you take a peek at a story I collaborated with SueBrasil, a brilliant author.
It's about a mistake in judgment a lady makes concerning a friend, based
on the hurtful words of someone that only thinks of himself. Will that
conniving person succeed in ruining a beautiful friendship, or will she see
through his lies? It's gradually creeping up towards the 30,000 mark
and we’d love any votes or hearing whatever comments you may wish
to make. It is listed in my profile under ‘FAVOURITES’ as Apologize.

I don't mind feedback (positive or critical), but I find that a reader's reaction is far more welcome than their suggestion. Don't tell me what to do, tell me what I've done to you (even if it's bore or frustrate you). I've been writing long enough that I'm pretty confident in the decisions I make as an author, including when and how to end a story. I don't publish works in progress. When I publish a story, it's a fully formed narrative.

Are they perfect? Well, I'm not Noll. I aspire to be one day.

Anyway, as I said earlier my response to these suggestions is "variations on..." If readers are polite and well-intentioned in their comments, I'll usually respond to them politely (I may be kind of an asshole, but I'm not a complete asshole). But the underlying message is still there - if you have all these great creative ideas, don't waste them on me, put them down on the page, and write the story you want to read.

In some cases, I'm already on the same wavelength. In others, I'm not. In rare cases, they are so far off base that I wonder if they read the story that I thought I had written.

In any case, if I respond at all (I generally do if it is a PM, not always if it is in a comment), I just politely acknowledge it and if it is a sequel idea, thank them if it is something I might actually use. So far, I don't think I've actually done a sequel based on a suggestion and in one case I already had a sequel under way and my sequel wasn't quite what the commenter suggested.

I don't mind suggestions. It hasn't happened to me very aggressively on Lush but when I was posting my novel elsewhere, I got suggestions all the time. Someone wanted the two main characters to have kids (one was a supernatural creature, so I decided, no). Mostly I couldn't use them but one suggestion ended up being the epilog.

The oddest thing was when someone wrote fan fic in my novel's world. It was so strange seeing someone else direct my characters.

I was first surprised that anyone cared enough after reading one of my submissions that they would comment.
I soon learned I learned a lot from them. After all, they are our clients. Without the readers' comments and feedback,
we have little idea if anyone likes what we are doing, or where we need to improve.

As the comments started coming in, they became more involved. I have said this many times, my absolute favorite
part on Lush is the interaction with people who like to banter in forums, and comment on my work, good, bad, and
even indifferent.

An excellent example of this writer/reader interaction is in the Floridian Swing story - parts 1 and 2.
I've posted the links here for you to check out the comments and my replies.

https://www.lushstories.com/stories/wife-lovers/floridian-swing-part-1.aspx

https://www.lushstories.com/stories/wife-lovers/floridian-swing-part-2.aspx

In this case, the comments from part 1 altered, rightly or wrongly, my original vision for this story. Sadly, I've been
so busy with other stuff and other stories et al, that I have neglected the next chapter in this saga.

Sorry buddy! You know who you are. I'm working on it.

In addition, I have approached, and have been approached by, many Lush members to write stories about their experiences and
fantasies. I've lost count how many now, but I did start a series called Confessions that tells the true story of someone's
cheating experience. This series was inspired by feedback and then a request. I have a number of stories for that series, but I
have not yet been able to write them.

So, for me, feedback is my opium. Suggestions are my fuel.

I hope my long winded answer helps.

I have a few fans here (just not any mods! lol). I treasure their input. Usually they just want sequels or continuations of my series. When I wrote Sapphic Tales years ago, I had an avid reader who fancied herself a pirate queen, so I wrote her into my 2nd ST story as a sexy pirate girl. She loved it!

As a person who has you on my list of writers I follow, (not everyone is on the list...sorry , Noll) I've read a good number of your postings.... not sure if I have ever commented on a y of them....
If I do, I typically would be excited, motivated or frustrated with what I read. If a great series in place, I keep tuning back in.... but to be truthful... fer are good series writers.... as good as the start can be, the tail does not wag the dog!
As others stated, some enjoy the suggestions and even help with keeping or getting a story line back on track. I've always wonder about the many persons give up after a few stories, run out of gas, or become frustrated with negative feedback and no coaching. some may be too shy to seek coaching. I see so many stories in the archives that should of.... could of been a better story if finished. the one time writers who get stuck sometimes can use a nudge.

Note to self.... don't nudge at Just_a_guy_you_know.

I have sort of an idea of reader etiquette that may not exist outside of my own head. There are a lot of stories on this site that don't go where I want them to. So instead of asking the authors to change their stories to suit my expectations, I write the stories I'd want to read. I write for myself first, and then if others are interested in them, that's great, but I'm rarely concerned with what other readers (in general or specifically) on the site will find exciting or entertaining as I'm writing. I do appreciate when readers take the time to make comments on my work. I'm just not open to unsolicited collaboration on stories - particularly when the commenter offers just a sentence or two suggesting some new direction, and then expects me to do all the work of actually writing it for them. To me, that seems kind of inappropriate to ask of an author.

However, it seems like a lot of authors here are happy to take suggestions from their readers on story direction, etc. I'm nowhere near that interactive with my audience. Maybe I'm a bit of a misanthropic control freak when it comes to authorship. While I don't mind feedback on the stories in terms of the craft of writing (I'm not claiming I'm a perfect writer either), and I'm always interested in the reactions of my readers to the writing, I personally find that suggesting plot ideas for sequels or (especially) alternate endings is somewhat intrusive. A lot of the time, like Seeker4 mentioned, they're off-base, and it feels a bit like trying to hijack my story.

I get them all. Requests come in the form of comments that say things like "what happens next?" or "I hope there's a sequel coming soon." Advice and suggestion usually come in the form of private messages. I'm never offended by these and honestly I appreciate when someone catches an error or has a suggestion. It's how I've become a better writer over the years. Being able to bounce ideas with other people helps me see what will work and what won't. I've had those who call my writings crap and other horrid things, and those I ignore (plus, they aren't from members here, but from a different story site that has very low standards.) When I get a legitimate suggestion, I do take it seriously and if I can incorporate that into my piece, I do. Sometimes those suggestions find their way into a different story.

Noll,,, that was a left handed poke..... I'm not sure anyone reads my list of authors I follow, anyway.... not sure why I have one!!

I see your point, Just_a_guy_you_know..... thanks for further explanation..... looking on to your next posting, having finished the 14 chapter you last poster. Surprise me! (Not offering and suggestions!)

I don't get suggestions on how to change the plot of a story - most of the suggestions are how to make it read better (thank you Mods!).

Now I occasionally get ideas FOR stories and I will use a conversation I have with someone as the basis of a story (with due permission of course). I have written a few stories as we bounce ideas off each other.

Oddly, I just submitted it right now. It was an idea I had while I was working on the other piece, but completely unrelated.

It's always interesting and fun to see how readers react to my writing. I occasionally get suggestions for situations they'd like to see my characters in. More frequent are requests to write sequels, which I have yet to do.

I often get asked to write a sequel which I sometimes do, but I have noted that sequels very seldom get as many reads as the original story, maybe it's the quality, what do I know.

I've had a few sequel requests but very few actual suggestions to improve a story or suggest edits.

I actually am a bit disappointed by that as I suppose I had hoped to have a mentor just land in my lap once I published my first piece here. If someone were to make a critique on a story or poem I would be thrilled to bits. It would feel like they really were interested in reading. Unfortunately, while I appreciate my 5s, I have little faith in them as an accurate measure of literary opinion.

That nearly made my tea go up my nose... and I'm usually so good at swallowing! [Abi! Behave!]

I've had lots of suggestions, especially with multi-part stories on Lush and ebooks from readers saying that they'd like to see this or that happen or 'I don't like where this is heading'. Sometimes I let the feedback guide me but most of the the time the characters know what they want to do, and who with and I just let them get on with it :-)

I've got this weird recollection that when I first joined Lush (5 years ago) there was an option to go into other people's stories and add to them. Or have I misremembered that? Maybe other older members can confirm?

I'm glad you can't do that now - I'd hate to have people mucking about with mine!

But lots of my stories have been inspired by conversations with people on Lush. I like it when a chat gives me a new idea for a story.

22 February 2024 - How about a quick plug for one of my filthiest recent stories? It's all in the title - Naked Pool Party Swingers | Lush Stories Please read, comment and maybe give it a ❤️ - or even a⭐ if you really enjoy it! Thank you! Annie xxx
