I can only guess for the exercise. Just like running without a finish line. The lead to it is it's own thrill too, or the only thrill. You don't just masturbate just to cum, obviously you like to actually play with yourself too. It's never just about the finish line, some don't even need it.

Can't recall doing it intentionally... but it has happened because of interruptions... as others have said, I enjoy edging - usually 60-90+ minutes.
