WHAT THE HELL IS HAIKU?

Too much of what is passed off as haiku today is anything but haiku, nor is it related to hokku, the genre Matsuo Bashō pioneered. Few take the time to study haiku or hokku.
Haiku has no universally agreed upon definition. Undefined, it cannot be academically classified as a genre. Haiku is not a Japanese poetic form. It is a Western invent given to the world by Shiki, who subscribed to the German University based mindset adopted by Japan during the Meiji era.

I got as far as the third paragraph on the first link and was lost.

No idea what it is and it's obviously something that I won't be spending time on either.

And no, it really didn't take much effort on my part to gather this mess...one of my Facebook friends, Robert D. Wilson, is co-founder of the journal Simply Haiku, and he posted this mess in one of the Facebook groups...I just shared it here because I thought someone might find it of interest...personally, I don't really give a hoot about Haiku myself...
