Chickens are fattened using cages that reduce their ability to move around. This leads to increased levels of bacteria in the cages and thus, anti-biotics are used in the chicken feed to reduce infections and disease.The chickens are overfed and then slaughtered after reaching a certain ideal weight level. The chicken meat itself is injected with a saline solution (salt and water) to increase its mass and to give it a more pleasing look in the stores.

you know that chickens are omnivores too, right? they'll eat meat. dead chicken parts are part of their diet. also, chicken waste is a huge issues, so they found that they can mix it with grains and feed it to cows, high source of protein. Also, dead cow parts are fed to chickens. the cycle of chicken waste to cows, cow parts to chicken, is one of the ways mad cow disease is spread. just tying to enlighten y'all. smile

I think if you take the feathers off, and deep fry the chicken, that should kill off all the bacteria...also, drinking liberal amounts of alcohol along with it helps as well, since it's a known fact that alcohol kills bacteria...

I don't think you're going to change my mind, sprite. Sorry. I'm quite comfortable in my role as an omnivore (yes, I eat vegetables, too). As for transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, I'm probably more likely to contract worse diseases.

More poultry is produced in north Georgia than anywhere else in the world. That industry employs huge numbers of people here. The rendering plants are really stinky. You often pass these huge poultry farms with a dozen or more enormous chicken houses. I have shoveled chicken shit 2 feet deep out of chicken houses when I was a teen. Not a fun weekend or summer job. The chickens are pumped full of anti-biotics. They live by the thousands in huge breeder houses (that doesn't bother me, the houses are heated & air conditioned.) At least they don't keep the chickens in cages here, except to temporarily take them to the rendering plants. There is good and bad to them being full of anti-biotics. At least the chicken meat will not contain disease but how do all of those anti-biotics effect people who eat that meat? I still eat it.

The vegetables you buy in the grocery store are genetically altered, spayed with insecticides, and fertilized with nitrogen. Corn fertilizer and insecticide in the American mid-west in the Mississippi Valley is so bad that it does much more damage polluting the Gulf of Mexico than the BP oil spill did. Furthermore all kinds of preservative addatives are added to vegetables in canning, before freezing, etc.

As for as organic vegetables. How do you know they are truly organic unless you either grew them yourself or knew who did? Secondly, organic vegetables contain much more bacteria on their surface than mass grown treated vegetables.

One major problem with organic vegetables is that they cannot be grown in sufficient quantity to feed the masses.

If you eat organic vegetables please take much more care to wash them thoroughly. (I also eat organic vegetables as much as possible)

I do love to visit my granddad at his farm. He loads me up on vegetables and fruit that he grows himself. He does raise free-range chickens and cows. But they are more like pets. Occasionally he'll fry up a chicken but he wouldn't part with one of those cows for anything. He rents out his bull for breeding. Lucky bull.

Yes, chickens are dirty birds. Cannibalism is a significant issue. When chickens are kept in close quarters they will attack kill and eat each other.

My brother works with many large chicken farms(egg producers) as he transports the major money maker for these farms: the manure. The farms that he hauls for include caged and free range. Those farms make approximately $1 per bird over the life of the bird from the eggs. The manure from eggs is the real money maker. It is one of the best fertilizers for the fields(producing grains for vegetarians and meat eaters alike). Additionally, this farm utilizes a digester to turn the methane from manure to methane, creating 1.8 megawatts.

The free range birds might be out of a cage, and the doors might be open, but they don't go outside and peck around like a household bird might. These are birds that are bred for generations and generations of very selective breeding. They sit and eat and sit and eat. They are the chicken equivalent to the video game/McDonald eating kid.

Chickens, btw, make excellent pets. They are an effective and pesticide free method of insect control.

Also with the exception of when the chickens are being feed, they are kept in dark barns. If a bird is put in a dark place it will sit. Therefore under-developing the legs while making their breast bigger. The request is higher because breasts is an "healthy choice".

Mass amounts amounts of chicken manure (shit) spread as fertilizer on vegetable fields, hay fields, and yards not only stinks really bad, but is a major pollutant. It washes off into creeks and rivers when it rains and eventually into the ocean. Plus it seeps down into the water table. So can you imagine how much chicken shit you consume in your water and fish.

i may be in a minority here but to be honest i never asked the chicken i'm getting ready to eat where it was born. i did, at one time, raise chicken for the eggs, but when i saw that when one chicken crapped, the other rushed over to peck at that waste, i realized i'd seen more than i want to know, so now buy my eggs and chickens from a store. i understand that animals are mistreated and that is bad but i also understand that as the population on earth increases there is less area to raise the hamburger, steaks, and chicken we so desire. I know that you vegans and such are ready to shoot me but i was raised eating meat, as was most most animals. most of the vegans in history are now extinct

A large part of my large extended family are ranchers in the southwest United States. When I was a teen, I lived in an area of Texas known for its stockyards. I spent one summer getting paid very well to shovel cow manure. No kidding. It was back breaking work and I stank each evening afterwards. Yet, I still eat beef.

I have no problem killing a hen or a rooster for dinner. I haven't had to do that in the last 25 years, but I have done it before and would do it again. I prefer my food to be treated as humanely as possible. I pay a premium for meat from animals that were treated humanely.

I love going to visit my family; they've always got the best food. Organic vegetables from their own gardens and meat from animals they've raised themselves.

There is a chicken farm, that uses flat screen TVs in the coops. They have nature scenes playing on them, the purpose is to make the chickens think they are free range.

Retailers add straw and sell it in heavy bags labelled compost ... yes its horse waste but still has plenty of useful goodness for the soil.

Its rarely horse shit. Its too difficult to collect, and doesnt provide as much nutrients as other animals. Chicken shit is actually very expensive (per my post earlier in this thread), so those bags at the store are frequently from cattle. Easy to collect, produced in huge numbers and not as valuable as chicken shit for spreading on fields.

I come from the Poultry Capitol of the World, so you can imagine the mass quantities of chicken shit around where I grew up. Chicken shit may be the stinkiest shit in the world too.

Folks, wash off those farm fresh eggs very thorough and wash your hands after handling them. Tons of bacteria on that egg shell. And if you eat fresh 'organic' veggies, wash those extra thorough. They haven't been cleansed at a processing plant and can easily have ecoli and other bacteria on the surface. I enjoy farm fresh as much as possible myself, but grew up around it enough to know it has to be washed very thoroughly. If not you'll get the kind of diarrhea that is so bad you end up in the hospital seriously ill.

PURE chicken stuff has a "bite" to the nose alright, ... and especially so in a closed confinement ... and its mainly due to an "ammonia" like component. But for "PURE STINK" that lasts and is nigh on impossible to wash off your hands, HOGS win the prize in my book! Don't ask me how I know...lol!!

This is an interesting point...

The answer is TWOFOLD... (I'm a BIG meat eater, BTW...)

Organic animals IN THE MAIN are fed a LESS PROCESSED DIET than 'battery farmed' animals. It's a QUALITY IN-QUALITY OUT argument. A corn-fed organic chicken will TASTE BETTER than a similar battery-farmed animal simply because its feed quality is better. This is ACTUALLY PROVEABLE if you take a look in your local supermarket. ORGANIC fillet chicken breasts, (for example) LOOK DARKER and richer than factory fed birds. And they taste better!

(I'm SERIOUS!!! FARMED FILETS LOOK TRANLUCENT!!! Free Range Fillets are OPAQUE.)

An egg from a a free-range hen as opposed to a factory hen WILL BE DARKER AND RICHER IN BOTH YOLK COLOUR AND FLAVOR...

But there is MORE INTERESTING IF SLIGHTLY WEIRDER REASON!!!

Factory farmed animals of all types, by virtue of the unsanitary conditions in which they are raised, are BOMBARDED with anti-virals, anti-pesticides and other chemical treatments. This WILL ensure that they are safe to eat, BUT, because these chemicals INHIBIT the animals natural biological defense system, natural anti-virals etc are NOT produced. And here's the weird bit. An animal with NATURALLY OCCURING ANTI-VIRALS in its system TASTES BETTER!!! (It's been proved!!! The naturally produced enzymes and chemicals actually FLAVOUR the animal's meat in a way that artificial compounds simply don't!)

Now, I'm a qualified Chef... (FUCK OFF I REALLY AM!!!) I USE both factory farmed AND free-range meat produce. But it depends on WHAT I'm preparing and WHO I'm serving. If I'm doing CURRIED CHICKEN, for example, fuckkit, I'm on the cheapest fillets I can buy. OTHER FLAVOURS are going to usurp the basic chicken taste and I can correct that by adding a stock cube to the sauce... (I use KNORR GEL STOCK CUBES!!!) BUT, if I'm doing SOMETHING MORE SUBTLE, say a roast chicken breast in a white wine cream sauce, THEN I'll need an organic filet breast... Simply because THE SAUCE will not OVERPOWER the true essential flavour of the meat... (So I NEED that flavour to BE PRESENT!)

Well, we'll just have to promote organic. Fresh is best, fresh veggies, fresh homegrown eggs & dairy, etc. I'm lucky, though I live in the city, I often have access to fresh from the farm because I have a lot of relatives that live on farms.

OK in all seriousness and yes I CAN try to be serious.

1. I don't really like eggs, I rarely eat them.

2. I do however always buy free range eggs because I feel otherwise is to promote the inhumane way that chickens are held in order to lay eggs for a cheaper price....Are they cheaper? Yes...Are free range double the price? Yes...I pay that price because I think it is appalling the conditions the chickens lives are unless free range.

3. For anyone who wants to promote vegetarianism DO NOT post in this thread its all grown in various forms of animal shit
