I am wondering if anyone has any advice for meeting new people, I meet a ton of friends in college. However, over the last several years, I have grown and am no longer the college guy, while many of my friends either took professional jobs that took them to other parts of the country/world or never grew up and I have had to discard because we are just no long compatible. I am still in contact with some of my friends that have moved away, but I have very few friends left that live around me. I am not the type of person that can just walk up to people and start conversation or flirt. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on meeting new people and making some new friends.

Thanks everyone in advance!

get a hobby or start doing something that is sociable, where you meet people. for instance: join a choir, a band, take classes (martial arts or drama or ball room dancing or something), do sports, be on a baseball or soccer team. Get into a gaming group, like board games or war games or such. hope that helps. smile

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

If you live near the sea, take up fishing! I don't know about fresh water fishing, but when you're at the beach or on a pier, everybody weants to know if you caught anything, how long you've been there, how long you've been fishing, etc etc. If you're a lad, the women love to see the fish you catch (careful of the fish huggers, they might push you in), and hear tales of the bigger fish you've caught, and the lads want to know if you will share any good info with them. If you're a lass, the women think it's great that you fish, and the lads are astonished.

It's a great way to meet new people. I'll warn you, though, if you're shy, you will have to find quiet and secret places to fish, because people won't leave you alone, they all want to talk! It probably works for fresh water fishing too, but make sure it's at a place where walkers go past frequently.

I use gloves and yell at anybody who gets stinky bait on my seatbox. I don't like puppies, they turn into dogs and you have to pick up their poo.

I think that is an excellent suggestion! Perhaps volunteer with a group like Habitat for Humanity or, if you're a racing fan [any form], get involved with one of the teams. If you're into kinky things, spend a long weekend at a 'Lifestyle' resort or find a local club; those are FUN people!

i used to do Meals on Wheels and met a LOT of cool folk that way - still do some off and on stuff, and yeah, you totally end up meeting folks - great idea smile

I also vote for Sprite's insight into this. Being a shy, retiring flower myself, I found it easy to meet new folks outside of my usual comfort zones by joining a squash league and board gaming groups. Anything you enjoy doing for fun.

Yeah...I've moved to several new cities where I knew nearly no one, and getting involved in things like people have mentioned helps a lot. Volunteering or joining a kickball/dodgeball league (those are great if you're not super athletic) or taking a class. Do what you like to do or just try a lot of different things. It's funny, I had this conversation with a friend years ago - most guys aren't great at making friends, or rather, it takes a long time if you didn't grow up with the guy or go to school with them. And as for being shy, sometimes faking it helps; just start off by saying hi and keeping expectations low until you're more comfortable having a short conversations. Or just ignore the last part and join something.

Just an addition to this, if you ask people about themselves, generally, you find they keep talking. If there's a lull, ask them something else either new, or following on from what they told you. Share when they ask you, but mostly, people are happy to talk all about themselves to you. It's sometimes harder to keep listening than it is to talk back.

My granddad always says:

Grow older, grow more mature, grow fatter, grow grayer, grow wiser, grow richer, grow more professional, but don't grow up. Let that kid down inside of you out just enough to make friends and enjoy life.

The best thing is just to get out and meet people. Go to a movie, go to a neighborhood thing. You never know who you could meet. I have gone to the community pool and a lot of people have struck up a conversation.

But they have to be either puppies or very well-trained dogs. If you sit on a park bench, the dog does NOT climb up on the bench with you. The dog does NOT yank you off your feet to chase something. The dog does not sniff ANYBODY, including other dogs, you know where.

That said, I enjoy dogs a lot.

Join AA or NA or CA. This technique works especially well if you're a teetotaler or don't do recreational drugs at all. You can pretend that you are the strong willed person and more of the silent leader type and over time become the mainstay of the group.

Probably be a great way to pick up on any single or divorced men and women, I mean...if that's what you're looking for (and of course...people have friends that they may introduce you to, too).

Hit the local casinos, chat with those sitting around the poker or craps tables.

Strip bars are a great place to make meaningless small talk and get some practice at overcoming your shyness.

Run for local/public office...you'll be forced to engage with people one on one. Hell, you might even have some good ideas and really be a helpful and positive force in your community.
