Thought this worth sharing...especially considering the growing number of poems I see using text language on poetry sites...

"Is the proliferation of texting among young people actually bringing them closer to poetry? Britain's poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy thinks that, in some ways, it is. Last week, she told the British newspaper The Guardian that there are parallels between poetry and texting."

Interesting article. Other than writing ideas / feelings down in a more condensed version, I fail to see how texting can be considered poetic.

She's very optimistic isn't she?

Duffy's idea that both poetry and texting are "language at play" seems more promising to me -- texting certainly encourages one to feel unfettered by the established rules of language and communication. But doesn't encouraging that much freedom and that little rigor lead to lazy, careless communication?

In my opinion, yes.

I hope and pray the english language doesn't evolve in such a snapshot abridged fashion. b4 u no it, we b speakn heart this 2 ea oth.

I must be old school, I usually spell out words in full even when texting.

Language does evolve though, texting is universally accepted, albeit mainly by younger generations. It is here to stay, on mobile platforms at least. Will they be teaching it in school soon I wonder? English Language, English Literature, TxtSpk...

I suppose they will have to have at least night courses for adults and slow youth so they/we can catch up with it or learn to understand it.

I think text speak was more common before the smart phone when you had to use the number pad and hit the number several times to get the letter you wanted. At least I remember texting in that fashion when I had the old razor. It just took forever to type anything out. After getting a smart phone typing has become easy and I almost type as fast using one as I do on a keyboard. Plus the smart phones recognize the longer words and fill them out when you hit the space bar. So in a way when you send a person a thought or two in the middle of the day it can seem like poetry. I typed this all out on my phone right now. It took about two minutes or so.

Let me tell you something Felix...text speak is very alive and well, and rather unfortunately it is finding its way into "poems" at an alarming rate...

It seems to be extremely popular among younger "poets" and I use that term loosely, from India...for some reason or another...

They seem to find it quite acceptable...much to the chagrin to the rest of us I might add...
