As you are probably aware, people have to be a member in order to vote a score a 1, 2 or 3. This measure was implemented to prevent driveby down-voting of stories. When people are held accountable for their actions, they often behave differently.

In your settings, you can set it so that anonymous votes are disallowed (which would mean non-member scores of 4 or 5 would be disallowed too) if you wish.

We are no longer investigating claims of "suspect voting", we simply don't have the time or resources available to deal with messages from authors complaining they received "only a 4" for their latest story from several people, for example.

Every one of the half dozen cases we have investigated recently, have all been isolated IP addresses / different members.

The scoring is obviously not perfect, and isn't to everyone's satisfaction, but is how it is going to stay.

Once Gav is done with the database switch over, and mobile version of the site, we will add in the ability for authors to turn off voting entirely. That will cheer those up who don't care about scoring on their stories.

Thank you.

Can we set it so that voting by certain members is disallowed? Just asking...

That sounds wonderful! Could we though, have a further choice to turn off votes but still enable comments? That is what I enjoy the most.

I often wish that I could vote using decimals, especially in the 4 range. The quality of some stories, especially the well written longer ones, that it kind of forces me to drop the vote to a 4 on the shorter ones. It just seems to me the the author of a great longer story had to put so much more effort than a great short one. And having only 2 choices, 4 or 5, doesn't really allow me to vote as I really feel. For intance, voting a 4.6 instead of a 4. I just feel that a whole number drop is too servere. Thanks for all you do and I really love this site. smile

In that case I really hope that you leave a comment for the writer, explaining your reasons.

Usually, comments are far more informative and constructive than the voting system, but sadly, using the convenient drop down option to vote means that people who might otherwise happily provide helpful comments let it go at using a score.

You know, an easy way to do that would be to increase the range of scores from 1 to 5, to 1 to 500...this way, say if you think a story deserves a 4.32 under the current system, you could just score it a 432...

I'm sure Gav would have no problem with this...

I personally think we should have the option of scoring stories in binary, decimal, and also the option of entering irrational numbers in honor of Pi Day...

I see your point Tom, we considered a 10 scoring system initially, but went with the 5 after looking at every other site like this.

From the looks of votes received verses the number of views a story gets, it seems to me that most readers choose not to vote to begin with. Yes, it is nice for writers to get some measure of satisfaction from their labors but are metrics that realistic for this purpose? For example, do votes received actually reflect how well the author’s followers liked his/her story or are there merely an indicator of how popular the author is within the site? Does the number of views reflect how many times the story was read or is it merely an indicator of how often the page was opened? No system is perfect and this one seems okay to me. It would be nice if more people voted; however, I do wish more people would take the time to comment on stories. Yes, it requires a little more effort from the reader but I think the content in the comments could be far more valuable to the author.

I'm sorry, I'm not zombo.com's technical support

I get the feeling they haven't updated that site in 12 years, and the newsletter never worked. You can get a t-shirt or mug at their online store I think still.

Just between you and me...I borrowed them from Bunny's south-facing garden, on my way over to Nicola's house, that morning.

All it cost me was a mild ass caning and 3 minute boot licking. I think she took photos, but she let me wear this nifty zip-up leather mask, so my identity was protected.

Here's what I noticed about the scoring.

Often a so-so story that gets 6 "5s" and no "4s" will show up in the listings as much more popular than a really good story that has 36 "5s" and 3 "4s".

I know why this happens because if I don't like a story I just don't vote on it. Why make an enemy by giving someone a "3"?

I wish there was some way to reward a really good story in the ratings by rewarding the sheer number of 5s it gets, not just a numerical average. Maybe some sort of a volume weighting..

That's the engineer in me..

Of course the best way to give feedback is to comment..

Make an enemy? by voting a 3?
I think a 3 is a good vote, it means my story was average and readable but lacked some things that I can work on to improve.
I'm not ashamed of giving out 3's and I sure am not humiliated or getting sad by getting one. What I do not like is the 3000 views and only 10 votes... that's like the story wasn't even readable.

Just to add my two cents, I have the same problem as tomlando. Sometimes very hard to decide between a 4 and a 5! I, too, wish there was a wider range from which to choose.

Yeah, I know... no worries, ok? Just wanted to get that off my chest. : )

There will always be that no matter what rate you have.
Oh should it be a 7 or an 8.. I can't decide.. maybe we need to go to 20.

i'm still pushing for a range of 1 - 100 smile with DECIMALS! all stories start at 100 and for everything we don't like about them, they lose a point AND grammar and spelling and typos each detract a score of .01! it's brilliant!

As it stands, it is my opinion that our voting system is a farce, not worth much at all. I would rather receive no feedback than superficial feedback.

I asked our membership back in August last year if 3 votes should require a comment, 72% of people voted in favour. http://www.lushstories.com/forum/yaf_postst12403_Should-voting-a-score-of-3-require-being-a-member-and-leaving-a-comment.aspx

I personally don't like people having to leave comments very much, for any score whatsoever. It would encourage more voting. The trouble with that is it's open to abuse.

I have asked Gav if it's possible to query the database, to see if the # of 3 votes has gone down since we set it up so that 3's require comments. If it has, then the system is almost forcing people to vote stories higher than they may do, or they simply won't vote.

The setup seems to work quite well, take this story for example: http://www.lushstories.com/stories/incest/help-from-my-sister.aspx - there are lots of 1, 2 and 3's, with some solid advice.

Maybe instead of forcing people to leave comments, the people who voted a 1, 2 or 3, are identified.

Members who voted a 3: nicola, lisa

Members who voted a 2 gypsymoth, loislane

Members who voted a 1 xXxdownvoterforfunxXx, misery

Think of the furore that would cause!

What do you suggest is a better setup Jill? I'm all for improvement.

all kidding aside, i wasn't around for the rule change about commenting if a 1 or 2 was scored, but i WAS here, and supported the change to comments when 3s were scored... and i remember the issue at the time, 3 bombs - that is, scores of 3 that were given, not because the story earned it, but because people were trying to knock other authors scores down thereby elevating their own rankings. i don't regret my support of the ruling, that said, yeah, it's sort of gone the other way - how soon before we are complaining about 4 bombers? i'm not sure i like the 1-5 system as it stands, maybe it really would be better to have a 1-10? that way we'd only complain about a 5 or lower? or maybe a 6? might help matter some? i don't know, maybe just a 3 scores...

smile :/ or sad

I'm tempted to remove the comment requirement totally. The oldest erotic story site in existence doesn't require any comments being made on any score.

We can easily track if the same people are voting down scores regularly. Gav could program something in to the new server to flag those people, and their votes would all be removed, as would their ability to vote.

A reminder, the new setup will have the option to turn off voting totally on your stories. Perhaps when that's in place, we should remove the comment requirements too?

Before it changed so that we had to comment if we voted a certain #, our votes showed in our profile. Not just "Jebru gave a score on Eden" but "Jebru gave a score of 5 on Eden. Maybe a move back to that would satisfy people, though I wouldn't mind a list of who voted what on each of my stories either. Not only for the sake of understanding the vote, but also just out of curiosity about who reads my stories.

Just open it up and ignore the whiners.

That's what I'm thinking of doing.

I'll leave the idea to stew for a while, until Gav has the new data server sorted out.

I like voting and comments and I am not against constructive comments. I hate it when I have 12 5's and someone breaks the streak with a 4 who wouldn't but am I losing any sleep, Nope!! I do with a higher percentage of people would vote I think less than 1% of the views vote so who knows, maybe peoples fingers are all messy and that makes it hard to vote (WEG).
Ehhhhh, What's up Doc?

The voting system will be changed slightly once Gav is finished with his server build.

Comments are not going to be required for any scores. Forcing people to comment has led to artificially higher scores, and less scores.
