I just saw a small trailer to a documentary that suggest the idea that tattoos should be considered a fine art. I think it is reasonably well documented with the growing number of people with tattoos that this once "marginal" trend is now widely accepted behavior / practice. So, Can tattoos be considered a fine art?Personally, I think so. There are tattoo artists today that are highly credited professionals. They, not only, have an artistic gift but they also have a distinct style and signature to their work. Overwhelming RealityFrom Across the Room

Definitely. Creative, individual, well thought out tattoos can be just as beautiful as a painting, the only difference is the canvas. Most tattoo artists not only work on skin, but work in many mediums, all which involve the same skill and talent to produce. My personal favourite Bugs ArtworkHe is a tattoo artist as well as a fine artist and has an amazing individual style to his work.

while tattoos are art and many artists are very talented, i dont think tattoos themselves are 'fine' art.

I think that tattoos can absolutely be considered fine art - although there are plenty really nasty tattoos out there as well... Buena Vista TattoosNot what I would personally choose, but amazing artwork nonetheless I am currently having my back done and I hope that it will be a work of art when finished

One is skin one is canvas. Both produced or intended primarily for beauty rather than utility. Both requiring highly developed techniques and skills. Both similar subject matter. Only the medium differs. How can one be fine art and one not be fine art? Though as they say art is subjective.

I donr think that every tattoo is a piece of art, there are pretty bad tattoos and tattoo "artist" out there but yes they can be art. I have one small tattoo that was made by a friend that has won tattoo prices around the world he also makes incredible paintings. I consider all his work (tattoos, paintings and sculptures) to be amazing and incredible art. of course in my humble opinion mine is the best of all his creations

I agree with Crazydiamond, only the medium differs. But there are as many poor tattoos as there are poor artworks out there. I don't like too many tats eg Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox but one or two nicely designed ones can be very sexy.

Yes, I do think some tattoos can be considered fine art. I think 2Pac’s body art was an example of fine art.

Certainly they can be considered "art". Art itself is subjective at best anyway. I have several, all one of a kinds and all tell a story and have deep meaning behind them.Even had one entered for compitition(came in second dammit) Granted there is some work out there that is...shall we say less appealing and lack style, but each has a meaning to the one wearing them. I cringe when someone young gets one that will probably end up being regreted later, even I have one thats it now covered up by a much better piece.
Also, Archadia....the pain is fleeting but yes, they can be a rather expensive thing to start. I dont want to think how much I have invested now, and still looking at each next one to come in time.

Breathe is relating to my sport. And the doves represent my best friends who have passed away. then i have 2 stars that are covered at all times unles during sexual play :) lol
Tattoos is amazing art. and creative. It is a deep extression of yourself and how you feel.

Art, yes.. maybe. Fine art, no. Most tattoos are never entirely seen. Many are never seen at all. If no one sees it or has access to it does it still qualify as fine art? When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates

I have four. My sister and I have identical butterflies, designed by me, applied by her husband. All four are visible depending on what I'm wearing. Each tat is symbolic of something in my life. I don't consider mine fine art, although I have seen some amazing art. Consider the artists canvas... living, breathing skin.

Some tattoo's are a form of expression while others want art. i firmly believe that a good tattoo artist that takes pride in their work will alter the design. point being is some places will look better than others. if they have done many tattoo's then they should be able to suggest the best placement. I have four tattoos myself and each has their own story behind them. So if you want to look at it as art fine by me. i could care less what others think. bottom line.
Just let it go.

Some tattoos can. The ones that actually have meaning behind them, that have been thought about and perfect. I think those can be considered fine art.

I have tattoos ... and I love them. I believe my tattooist (Donovan) is brilliant.
But ..... I do not consider tattoos "fine art".
As we all know, the skin will be pulled by gravity ... and the 18 year old skin one day becomes the 60 year old (or in my case, the 100 year old skin) .... not as "fine art" after 80 years of washing, moisturizing, etc.
I look at "fine art" ... that stands the test of time ... and more than likely, increases in value somewhere along the line, because someone else has seen the beauty of the canvas, paper, rock, music sheet, etc etc.

I live in an urban environment and most of what I see is garbage. I'm sure it means something to the owner, but I don't consider it art. However, some of the tatoos displayed in this thread are different and I would consider them art. Live, change, grow

absolutely depending on the the tat. your average pen ink jailhouse tat not so much but the ones that take hours to do and hundreds of dollars if done by the right person can be spectacular and definitely deserve to be in a museum

I have seen many tats that can pass for fine art. Some of the tattoo artists are just incredible with some of the ink they lay down.

Tattoos in the mind of some can be considered just ink. In my mind a tattoo artist is amazing and their works should be considered fine art.

I love to see quality tattoos. Some really are fine pieces of fine art. I have three tattoos. The artist that did them is excellent but the tattoos themselves are not really creative, just something important to me.

I agree with you. I think the only reason why people in society nowadays regard them as "trashy" is because people take it to another level. If you don't cover your entire body with it, I think it's just fine. Tattoos are a neat way of expressing yourself and I'd love to get one soon. Besides, in many ancient cultures, tattoos were a way of expressing your role in society

I think tattoos are a fine art. Most tattoos I think have inner meanings to the person and can describe were that person's been through or what their life is devoted to. Even when people have tattoos they regret, at some point they wanted it and its living proof that you are past that part of your life.
